To Be or Not To Be…Online for Classes?

January 30th, 2013

To be or not to be? That is the question. Actually, the question is really to be online or not to be online…online for classes. There are many points to be made for both sides of the argument. For some it’s the ease, flexibility, and affordability of online classes. For others, though, it’s not as fulfilling or substantial enough. What it comes down to is what type of personality you have and what type of environment you learn best in?For those who swear by distance education, they take full advantage of the ease of taking such classes. They may not be as comfortable in a traditional class setting and, therefore, don’t learn as well. This allows them to fully concentrate and absorb more of the information. The flexibility allows people to take the courses on their own schedule. Busy professionals and parents may find this very appealing. Lastly, online classes are more affordable. If someone is taking the classes to retool for the workforce or just as a hobby, they don’t have a lot of extra money to be throwing around. Now, those are all valid points, however online classes are not for everyone. The types of people who excel in social environments would not be well suited for online classes. They learn much better by interacting with others. They enjoy group projects and thrive on personal communication. Likewise, some people do not feel that online classes give you the same depth of understanding that a real, live teacher can. This group of people will have the time and patience to sift through some of the extracurricular conversations that are had in an actual classroom in order to experience the communal style of teaching.

Ultimately, it might be a combination of the two that gives you the most satisfying results. However, there will always be at least two opposing opinions when it comes to something as personal as education. Honestly, only you know what type of personality you have and what choice you should make. Either way, chances are you are making the best choice for you and your situation. To be or not to be…that will always be the question!

How recruiting software can bring in the right candidates

January 17th, 2013

Recruiters have to be on point with the people that they are bringing in for jobs. It is often not enough to simply have someone in place that may be somewhat qualified for the job. This is not what recruiters are paid for. To the contrary, recruiters are paid quite well to make sure that the candidates in place are a perfect fit for each job that is filled. This is why the recruiting software is so important in consulting firms.

When recruiters get hired they will always have a long list from their clients. There is never a time when a company will hire a recruiter and give these consultants a broad overview of what the company is looking for. Any candidate can walk in and apply for vague job titles like analyst or administrator with degrees in various fields. This is not that uncommon. It is more common, however, to see a long list of qualifications that a recruiter must keep track of. This is where the software becomes highly valuable.

People in charge of getting the best candidates need software programs that will allow them to take charge of the recruiting process. Some recruitment software will give people the opportunity to move beyond the tedious paperwork process. When someone can click on certain attributes and get a database search with these results this is good software. That is the best way to keep track of potential job candidates.

That is why the job seeker has to have the right buzz words. When the resume with the right buzz words comes together with the software program for recruiters the job is much easier. The database can search entries quite quickly and provide the information that you need.

The best recruiter is going to be defined by the type of software that they have. This can make a big difference when it comes to speed and accuracy. Anyone in the recruiting business that is still rambling through physical folders for candidate information will be light years behind recruiters with virtual documentation on candidates. It may take a little more time to scan resumes and put job candidates into a database, but it can become the true source of strength for a recruiting company. Anyone that has a desire to venture into recruiting should start with recruiting software. This is what makes the recruiter shine with their loyal clients.

How to refill your ink cartridges for your small business

September 25th, 2012

Ink for your printer is one of the most expensive things you will ever buy for office supplies. It’s easy to spend hundreds of dollars on printer ink within a year’s time. You don’t have to spend that much if you are willing to learn how to refill your own cartridges.

Steps to refill ink cartridges:1. Buy a refill kit either online or at your local discount or office supply store.
2. Gather up needed materials such as the refill kit, paper towels, and clear tape, rubber gloves, and the empty cartridge you intend to refill.
3. Prepare the surface you will be working on. Spread out paper towels, about four thick, to prevent staining.
4. Read the manual to find out which specific supplies you need for your brand of cartridge.
5. Place the empty cartridge, the correct color ink, and other supplies from the refill kit on the paper towels.
6. Find the refill hole on the top of the cartridge. It typically is found on the top of the cartridge under the label. It may just be an indentation. There may not be a hole there.
7. Most kits provide a tool to make a small hole in the top of the cartridge. If not use a crafting knife, screw and screwdriver, or something sharp. Be very careful not to stab yourself. Use steady pressure in a twisting motion to puncture the cartridge.
8. There are four colors of ink in the refill kits, black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Choose the ink color you need and fill the needle with the amount the kit calls for, for your brand. Do NOT overfill the needle.
9. Insert the needle into the hole you made in the top as far as it will go.
10. Slowly depress the ink into the cartridge. Check to be sure it isn’t pouring out of the bottom. (If it is the cartridge is no good and can’t be refilled.)
11. Stop filling as soon as you see a little ink coming out of the top of the cartridge.
12. Clean up the top with a paper towel and put a piece of clear tape over the hole.
13. Repeat the steps for each color.
14. Place the cartridges in the printer and print an alignment page. (Follow the printer’s instructions for aligning the print heads.)Keep in mind not all cartridges can be refilled. Also, after refilling about 5 or 6 times you will have to buy new cartridges. Avoid letting the cartridges run completely dry to prevent clogging. Clean all supplies and tightly close up al ink. Keep everything together for the next time you need to use the refill kit. Last of all, enjoy saving money.

Your Office Is Your Home Away From Home

May 23rd, 2012

For many professionals in today’s work environment, they spend as much time during the week in their office as they do with friends and family. This is why it is important not only for an office to be professionally designed, but designed for convenience as well. When you choose a place to work, there are many different options. There are often times individuals who choose virtual office space over a traditional space. But likely you those who decide to get a traditional working space there are things to consider when designing an office space such as considering the needs for the employees to complete their job on a daily basis.

Obviously, the daily procedures in the office must be enhanced by its design. Work in amenities to help your employees relax and perform at a high rate as well though, as a happy employee is a productive one.

For professional purposes, design the space for convenience. Provide enough printers, fax machines and other office equipment so they are available when needed. Limit the amount of time the employees that use them most must spend walking to that equipment. Management offices should be located near their colleagues for collaboration as well as near their employees to foster constant communication and feedback. The foundatin of teamwork starts with the layout of the office. Do not enclose and isolate your employees, unless it is absolutely necessary. Provide the open space and lines of sight needed to foster open communication among coworkers and their supervisors.

All work and no play makes for a stale work environment. Not every moment as the office has to feel like a task. Provide conveniences to improve the spirits of your employees. One simple way is by providing conveniences such as water machines throughout the office and coffee machines as well. Provide a break area where employees can gather for their meals away from their desks. Be sure to have refrigerators and microwaves, allowing them to save money by bringing meals from home. Other items to improve employee morale in the office could include televisions and computers for personal use in the break room. Comfortable seating both at their desks and in the break room will help them relax and feel more comfortable as well.

Designing your office should not be the task of a single person or even a very small group. Get input from various individuals and departments within the company. Ask them what they want to have in their office space. Knowing the wants and needs of the employees makes it much easier to design a professional workspace that is comfortable and pleasant to work in.

Whether you have pictures, diagrams, or designs, make your website appeal to the customer’s eyes. The last thing you want is to turn away potential customers because the phone number was incorrect, because the sense a last-minute-project when there are too many errors or if it is difficult to understand.
  • The purpose of a website should be to draw potential customers towards your business and not away from it. But including these 5 features in your website is critical if you want your business to succeed and grow.

Filing Your Taxes as a Business

March 23rd, 2012

Filing your taxes is never a fun experience, regardless of how much you are getting back. The problem is that the rules change every year, making it nearly impossible to do taxes the same each year. Although this can make it fun and interesting for a small percentage of the population that likes the challenge of keeping up with the tax changes, in general those changes are more annoying than fun. Thankfully there are some basic rules that never seem to change.

Deductions can be taken for anything that helps your business grow. This can mean anything from daily expenses to advertising. The problem is when personal and business expenses collide, such as for the home office; the IRS tends to get leery when what is ostensibly personal equipment gets used for business purposes. The IRS wants the usage broken down, and the person gets a deduction based on that use. As long as the numbers are a best guess the IRS is unlikely to flag the filer for an audit. A particular area that needs to be watched is car use; just slapping a magnetic advertisement on the vehicle does not make it a moving tax deduction.

Everything should be run through a certified public accountant. A little paranoia is a good thing, and can help you feel more comfortable when the taxes are actually filed. CPA’s keep track of every little change in the tax law, giving them an advantage over most company accountants, who must deal more with day-to-day business than keeping pace with current law, especially for medium-sized companies where they financial department is just big enough to handle most challenges but small enough to be swamped by minor emergencies. There is a reason that small CPA firms do more business in tax season; it is because successful companies are paranoid and those small firms help cure that.

When it comes to taxes it helps to cover your posterior. Documentation is your best friend, and can help in the case of an audit. It helps to bear in mind that an audit is just the IRS’ version of paranoia; they are only making sure that everyone is doing their taxes the right way and should not be taken personally. Tax season can be one of the most stressful times of year, especially for businesses that have experienced a lot of growth; in this case stress can be a good thing.

Best Places to Have a Business Vacation

February 12th, 2012

The best places to have a business vacation depends on what you’re looking for in the way of a “Business” vacation? Do you want to get some actual work done or are you looking for a real getaway for a “bonding” experience?

Some of the most enjoyable places also depend on the time of year you’re planning the trip. Scottsdale or Sedona, Arizona are very well known business getaways. The luxury hotels cater to many business vacations yearly, but the best seasons are a bit different for each. They’re both beautiful places but you would want to plan the trip to Scottsdale during the winter months when the weather usually has a nice cool breeze quality. Sedona is great in the winter if you want to chance the cold winter, but it’s a great place during the spring and early Fall.

If you would like to go all out then Las Vegas offers so much that it would take a lot of self-restraint to get any work done. Never-the-less, Las Vegas has many amenities for conventions or small business get-a-ways.

San Diego is another great location available for business vacations. The beauty of the ocean and the tailor-made tourist accommodations let you decide on how much business you want to get done. San Diego has some of the best seafood restaurants as well as shopping opportunities, great golfing, and tourist attractions to take up the slack between business meetings.

On the east coast you’ll find plenty of incentive packages in Orlando, Florida. The resorts offer special off-season packages for business use. Of course you’ll be in the land of huge tourist attractions so you’ll need to decide if this will be more fun than work.

New York, New York has many opportunities to take advantage of, but a trip to the “Big Apple,” would require pre-planning to take advantage of the great Broadway shows. For a more subdued experience, the Catskills offer the beauty of upper New York. The many resorts in the area have packages that include scenic hikes, horseback riding, fishing, great restaurant offerings, plus relaxing therapeutic packages.

Plan your business vacation to take advantage of seasonal incentives offered during the off-season. Many companies have taken advantage of these incentives in locations like Hawaii. Like most business vacations you’ll probably have some free time to enjoy the location so you’ll want to make sure your company plans accordingly.
